Liberal Democrat MEP Liz Lynne has today kicked off the party's European Election campaign in the West Midlands.
The launch comes on the same day as in London Nick Clegg launched the Liberal Democrats national campaign for the European and local elections which will take place on June 4th.
Liz started the campaign by taking to the streets, meeting voters in historic Stratford- Upon- Avon. Later she will be taking part in a hustings event held by the Jubilee Debt Campaign and Friends of the Earth at the Birmingham City Council Chamber. In the coming weeks she will be touring across the West Midlands region taking the LibDem message of working with other European Countries to the area.
Speaking at the start of the campaign Liz said she was seeking re-election to fight for the best deal for everybody in the West Midlands:
"I believe that laws should always be made at the most local level possible, but there are some areas when the whole of Europe needs to work together. Pollution, international crime and the global recession are some of the biggest challenges Britain has ever faced, but we can only tackle them if we co operate with other countries. Climate change knows no borders.
"I have fought for transparency and reform and for the EU only to get involved in issues when we are stronger acting together. I fought successfully to keep the voluntary opt out on the 48 hour weekly working time limit which our 18,000 retained firefighters rely on. People should be able to work overtime if they choose to.
"I have also worked for many years on creating Europe-wide rules to stop discrimination on the basis of age, disability, sexual orientation and religion or belief - race and gender are already covered. By doing this at EU level it means that no matter where people are in the EU they can expect the same treatment.
"No one has faith in Gordon Brown or Labour rule any more. The Conservatives and UKIP want to isolate Britain, which at this time of international crisis would be a historic mistake. I hope people will vote LibDem on June 4th - the election result could be very close!"
