'UPTON FLOOD DEFENCES VITAL FOR FUTURE VITALITY OF TOWN' - BURT

Local Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate, Richard Burt welcomed the latest plans for flood defences at Upton after attending a consultation on detailed designs at the Memorial Hall last Thursday.

Mr Burt, who spoke to members of the public and Environment Agency officials, said that the plans could still be tweaked to improve the visual impact, but the opportunity to protect the town must now be "grasped with both hands".

"These Flood protection plans provide the best cost/benefit analysis for the town, which is why we have got the £3.6million on offer to build it.

"I share the disappointment that Hanley Road could not be fully protected under this current scheme, but recognise that if it had been included, Upton might not have been high enough up the list to qualify for a government grant in the first place, and we may have ended up with nothing.

"There is always the opportunity to apply for Local Flood Levy funding to protect houses there when the main scheme has been completed.

"This is a fantastic opportunity and must be grasped with both hands for the good of Upton.

"Town Mayor, Tim Perry and many others involved have put their life and soul into getting this project right and they deserve people's full support and gratitude."
